I’ve spent 20 years building software, the last few building the kind of system a business runs on. I’ve watched a lot of people fight their tech at midnight. For a long time I had the problem diagnosed wrong myself.
I thought it was about money. You pay a few hundred a month for the platform your business runs on, the bill creeps up, and you file it under “this is getting expensive.” So you shop around, compare plans, promise yourself you’ll switch some free weekend that never comes.
The money was never the real problem. You’re paying every month to fight the platform you’re renting. The checkout breaks the night before a launch. An automation quietly stops firing. Your list sits somewhere you can’t easily move it from. You’re not overpaying for tech. You’re paying rent to fight it.
Rent doesn’t build you anything
Overpay for something you own and at least you own it. Pay too much for a car, it’s still your car; it still holds value. Rent doesn’t work that way. You pay every month for the platform your business runs on, and that same platform is the one breaking at the worst possible moment. You’re paying a premium for the thing you fight.
And they can raise the rent whenever they want, often with little warning and no recourse. A “locked-in” rate is one pricing email away from a surprise increase, and your options are pay it or move everything.
A year of rent buys another year of access. That’s the whole return: no asset, nothing that holds value, nothing to show for the money.
It keeps you stuck, too. Your courses, your list, your years of content sit on servers you don’t control, so even thinking about leaving ties your stomach in a knot. That knot isn’t loyalty. It’s the lock-in working.
“But I’ve already put so much into this”
Most people push back right here: I’ve got two years of work in this thing. I can’t just walk away from that.
I understand it. But an investment leaves you owning something. Rent doesn’t. Those two years of payments didn’t buy you a piece of the platform; they bought you two years of access, and the meter’s still running.
The money you’ve already spent isn’t a reason to stay. It’s the thing keeping you paying. Better question: how much more do you want to pay to rent something you’ll never own?
“The last thing I need is another system”
The other worry: the fix sounds worse than the problem. A whole system? More to set up, more to learn, one more thing to babysit.
Look at what you’ve already got. Kajabi handing to Stripe, ActiveCampaign to Zapier, Zapier to Calendly, a stack that grows by one more login every few months, all of it held together with duct tape and hope. That’s the overhead. You’re paying it now, in dollars every month and hours every week as your own unpaid tech support.
A real system isn’t one more thing on the pile. It’s what clears the pile. One place where your email, forms, checkout, booking, and courses talk to each other because they were built to.
The option most people never get shown
There’s a third option nobody selling you a monthly plan mentions. Not “rent forever,” not “learn to code and build it yourself.” You can own the same setup: your site, list, courses, payments, and booking, in one connected system that runs about as simply as what you rent now, without someone else holding the keys and setting the price.
It usually costs less than the rent, and what you spend goes toward something you keep instead of something you’re borrowing. The money’s the smaller half, though. The bigger half is the late-night fight going quiet, because the thing was built right and it’s yours.
